Why Should I Consider the Environment When I Choose a Candidate?

Most pollution comes from private corporations. Companies normally stay in business through profits; so i would say they usually value those first. Most businesses see sustainability as an obstacle to profit- a pesky detail unimportant to the aforementioned bottom line. Greenness takes added thought, higher costs, and more of their time. Basically they see little to no reason to care for the planet that sustains them. As individuals, we can exercise some influence as consumers and employees and in recent times we have seen some fruit from that. Using our voting power, we can do much more to put things on the green track before we run out of time. The government can investigate companies’ practices behind closed doors in ways that would get individuals arrested. The government can make more specific changes like setting emissions standards and safe waste disposal procedures, while individuals can just email some suggestions. The government can add incentives and penalties for specific actions while individual consumers can only choose to patronize or not. Finally, while both are metaphorically and literally important, people notice trees more than grassroots; elected officials have a much broader platform to speak on environmental issues. If i make a great speech while chained to a tree, 100,000 people might read about it in the local news. If a president makes even a bad speech while just standing in front of the White House, billions of people might see it on international news broadcasts. Our individual votes combine our social authority for a single leader to enact much bigger change than we could do alone. You probably care about some issues apart from the environment. I do. So vote your values, but pIease remember the value of life on earth. If we want to continue enjoying this beautiful planet, we have to take action.
