Because it will kill way less birds than climate altering forms of non-renewable energy. A study of 58 different surveys found that the classic monopole turbines kill between 140,000 and 328,000 birds a year in collisions. While that is a sad number of birds, wind power slays very few birds compared to outdoor house cats, cars, and windows. Engineers are releasing safer designs of vertically shaped wind turbines, think flat kitchen mixer for a visual. Others are being built more like L shaped tunnels with nets over the ends to keep animals out. Also see, "How Can We Make Wind Power Safer for Birds?"
