What Are Invasive Species?

Writer's picture: Isaac SmithIsaac Smith

They should have stayed in their home country instead of coming to ours. They steal the resources from the locals who can’t always defend themselves. If they can’t be subjugated, they should be eradicated. They can’t be allowed to take over.

Did i freak you out yet? Ha, let me explain. I found in my work with habitat restoration that this violent, extreme, xenophobic rhetoric applies as great to invasive species as it does badly to humans. When someone releases a plant, animal, fungus, or microorganism to an ecosystem where it does not belong, that introduced species can begin to destroy the new habitat. Ecologists designate these destructive biological imports as invasive species. See, ecosystems have their own balances to keep each piece from eclipsing the rest. For instance, in their Central and South American home ecosystems, natural predators with exact adaptations skillfully predate on monstrous cane toads. But after farmers in other countries brought in cane toads in to control cane beetles eating their crops, the cane toads began devouring every animal in sight. Native predators had insufficient adaptations to survive their poisonous defenses and enormous size, so the cane toads took over and wiped out local wildlife. Cane toads serve as an infamous example of an invasive species and they are not alone. Side note: not all organisms brought in from another area become invasive.
